PERMIT
Permit (35 lbs.)

Considered by many as the ultimate prize for the flats angler, Permit are found on the Florida Keys flats year round, best in March through July.

Average size, 8 to 15 lbs., common at 20 to 25 lbs., and reach 40+ lbs.

Most commonly worked with a 10 weight and a crab pattern, a number are taken on Tarpon and Bonefish flies when the Permit makes an unexpected appearance.

On a medium spinning rod, best bait by far is a live crab.

The tension on board is incredible as all eyes are on the black, sickle shaped tail piercing the surface. A Permit is digging into the turtle grass for his usual crab dinner, unaware that the morsel he is about to devour is attached to your arm by way of that magnificent combination of graphite, aluminum, and nylon known as a rod, reel, and line. The hook is set and the Permit blasts off the flat, melting line from the reel at an alarming rate. You are now experiencing the unbelievable speed, power, and endurance that only a Permit can provide. As the third leg of the flats "GRAND SLAM", this elusive creature is truly a prize worth pursuing.
