Marathon is a community of some 12,000 permanent residents and almost that many winter visitors. Located in the heart of the Florida Keys, it is 50 miles from Key West to the south (west actually) and 55 miles from Key Largo at the northern end of the Keys. It has numerous restaurants, motels and resorts, offering accomodations that range from rather plush to what amounts to nothing more than an air conditioned room with a bed, bathroom and TV. Prices range from near $300 per night for a 3BR 2Bath condo to $65 per night for "sleeping quarters".

     The Marathon airport is currently served by American Eagle and U.S. Air, with direct flights from Tampa, Orlando, and Miami. Driving time is about 1 hour from Key West and slightly over 2 hours from Miami International Airport.

     Eating establishments range from McDonalds, Burger King and Wendy's to Chinese and Mexican to fine steak and seafood restaurants.
