Maverick - The Saloon
The backdrop was constructed from foam core board. I covered the board with scrapbooking papers in a wood grain pattern and a flowered pattern above the chair rail. The chair rail was simply made from scrap pieces of balsa wood. I stained them with brown shoe polish. The walls were adorned with several guns, pictures, wanted posters, flags and a great moose head that I found as a Christmas ornament. The floor was constructed from a piece of foam core board covered with lengths of floor molding cut in various lengths and glued to the board. I drilled holes into the floor board to make room for several doll stands. The back of the bar was designed to give the appearance of a mirrored backbar. I used a sheet of mylar from a baloon to give the impression of a mirror, without the weight or fragility. I used balsa wood to make three shelves and added shelf supports from miniature dollhouse construction to hold the shelves in place. The bar was constructed from very thin plywood. It's open in the back for additional storage. The bar was stained with shoe polish to add some contrast to the floor and walls. Two fast food straws pushed together and spray painted with gold paint became the foot rail. I dry brushed some shoe polish to give it an aged appearance. ![]() On the bar, I
added an antique
style cash register, originally a pencil sharpener, as well. ![]() The spill on the bar was created from a resin compound with a bit of amber tint. I left a glass mug on the side to make it appear as though the bartender is cleaning up the spill. A small piece of an inexpensive washcloth makes a great rag. Several current and recent soldier type accessory sets contain weapons, rope, gunpowder receptacles and spyglasses, which all add to the detail of the scene. The table was found in a yard sale furniture assortment. The table showcases a miniature deck of cards, more miniature bottles, miniature glass mugs and some pipes. I had two similar chairs set aside for this scene. The chair being held by the figure in the blue shirt, looked the most appropriate for the scene. The other chair was suitable in color but not in shape. So, I cut the chair apart and placed it randomly under the figure lying on the floor. It gives the appearance of the chair previously broken under the figure. I added pencil shavings and wood shavings to the floor for additional interest. The spitoon began life as a wooden candle cup. I spray painted it gold and dry brushed some brown shoe polish to add an antiqued look. I was so proud that my entry tied for first place with two other entries and also won the Chairperson of Judge's Choice Award! |
